A few months ago, I was at a conference talking to a fellow metalsmith and she mentioned that she feels like she sees my work everywhere online. “You must have a great marketing team!” she said. When I told her I didn’t have a marketing team, and that it’s just me, she was shocked!
But it’s totally true. I have no marketing team.
Instead, I have a super simple strategy for promoting my business that I’m going to share with you today:
I get up every morning and complete at least one (and sometimes more) marketing task for my business.
That’s it.
And I make myself do this every morning before I set foot into my studio.
As I write this, it’s not quite 9 AM and I’ve already published a blog post (that featured my jewelry), scheduled some pins to go out on Pinterest throughout the day, AND scheduled an email to promote my new jewelry designs. And now I’m putting together this blog post.
Now here’s the thing about simple strategies. It’s easy to gloss over the critical details. So I want to highlight the most important part of my strategy.
It’s that I have to COMPLETE at least one marketing task every morning.
And by that I mean that I have to finish something that goes out into the world.
Every single day.
That something could be a blog post. Or an email to my list. Or a pitch to the media. Or turning on an ad campaign on Pinterest or Facebook.
The point is that EVERY SINGLE DAY I’m releasing more marketing into the world.
This is the part where I find many makers fall short. They may start the blog post, or the media pitch, or draft an email to the store, but stop before it goes out.
And your marketing only works if you send it out into the world. (Marketing is definitely one of those places where done is always better than perfect!)
Once I’ve sent my one (or more) pieces of marketing out into the world for the morning, I’m free to head into my studio and focus my energy there for the rest of the day, secure in the knowledge that I’ve done what I needed to do that day to move my business forward.
Oh, and I don’t labor over this task either. I get it done and head into my studio by 9 on most days. Because my studio time is important to me.
So if you’ve been struggling to “make time” for marketing, try my trick. Give yourself an hour each morning and send something out into the world.
If you stick with it, you’ll be amazed at the impact this has on your business over time!
